The 4 Responses to the Gospel

When you share the gospel, the person in front of you responds in one of four ways, and each one calls for a different next step. Three of them show up in a single scene in Acts 17, when Paul preached in Athens: some said no, some said maybe, and some said yes. Add the person who already follows Jesus, and you have the four responses you will actually meet. Reading the response like a traffic light keeps you from pushing a yes that is not there and from dropping someone God is drawing.

Sharing the gospel is only half the moment. The other half is what you do with how the person responds. Most of us have a plan for saying it and no plan for the reply, so a real yes slips away or a maybe gets pushed into a corner. It helps to expect the responses in advance.

Where the four responses come from

Paul preached the gospel to a crowd of thinkers in Athens, and in one short scene you can see the range of how people take it:

When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, but others said, “We want to hear you again on this subject.” At that, Paul left the Council. Some of the people became followers of Paul and believed. Among them was Dionysius, a member of the Areopagus, also a woman named Damaris, and a number of others.

Read the response like a traffic light

The easiest way to remember it is a traffic light, stacked top to bottom the way a real one is. Red means stop here for now, yellow means keep going carefully, and green means go. The fourth is the person already on the road.

The point is not to label people and lose interest. It is to give each person the next step that actually fits where they are.

🔴 Red light: they say no

Some people are not open, and that is where you bless them and move on. This is not writing anyone off. Paul did not argue the sneering crowd into the kingdom. He left, and some believed later anyway. Jesus told his followers to move on from a town that would not receive them, and to do it without bitterness. You keep the relationship warm where you can, you keep praying, and you spend your energy where God is giving openness. A red light today can turn green a year from now.

🟡 Yellow light: they say maybe

Plenty of people are genuinely interested but not ready to say yes. Do not push them toward a decision they are not ready to make, and do not drop them either. Give them a way to keep looking at Jesus for themselves.
